📣 A Study of Impact DAOs
A decentralized collaborative research project
Impact DAOs are showing up everywhere and are making real impact on the world. While covering DAOs I come across so many strategies, tips and ideas that I decided it makes sense to study them in a bigger way and to create a defining guide for others to learn from.
To make things a little more meta this project is itself a DAO. A decentralized collaboration by folks who like me are curious to learn about Impact DAOs. Consider this post a call to join in this endeavour as the knowledge we create is “Public Good” and will help thousands (if not millions) of changemakers.
Goal of the project
Create a practical guide that provides information, wisdom and insights into Impact DAOs. The guide would show changemakers how Impact DAOs operate and execute on their mission
Why Study Impact DAOs
Impact DAOs are internet native nonprofits and social enterprises built from birth to be transparent and decentralized. Coinbase CEO, Brian Armstrong predicts one billion crypto users within a decade and with so many new folks onboarding to web3 it’s important than ever to provide them with good documentation to help them make their own impact. I predict in the next couple years DAOs will be the most natural way for people to organize around causes.
Distributed autonomous organizations (DAOs) are internet communities that come together around a common purpose. Funds and governance are managed and coordinated on a public blockchain.
Creation of Impact DAOs have ballooned in the last 9-12 months. Web3 old entities like Gitcoin moved to a DAO model, traditional nonprofits like Big Green are experimenting with DAOs and the new ones are launching DAO first to govern their platform and other offerings.
With the explosion in Impact DAOs it’s important that we provide context, understanding and inspiration for individuals who will themselves want to start and contribute to DAOs.
Scope of the study
The research would involve interviewing founders and members to understand the structure, tokenomics, governance, funding, tooling, deliverables and impact measurement criteria. I estimate a timeframe of about 2 months (8-10hrs per contributor) to study 8-12 DAOs at different stages with an equal mix of social and climate DAOs.
Current status
Dream DAO GenZ members have offered to be part of this study and we are having our first team call soon. I’m particularly excited of GenZ being part as I believe their generation is the one who is going to ride with this research the most. We are also putting together a list of Impact DAOs to be considered for this study. If you have any suggestions comment below.

Soulbound tokens are new kind of tokens that are non transferable. Having them in your wallet signals your skills, associations and credentials.
