DAOs without Humans
Humans define the why. AI executes the how
Vitalik Buterin borrowed the concept of the DAO from Daniel Suarez’s sci-fi books, Daemon and Freedom. The decentralized autonomous organizations in those books were efficient, ruthless AI-run engines of coordination. The DAOs in real life have literally zero resemblance to that vision. The industry talked about Freedom™ but built digital bureaucracy.
DAOs of today have failed. Humans are the reason why.
DAOs promised a new, decentralized way of organizing on the internet. The reality? A bloated, bureaucratic nightmare. Drowning in governance calls, endless Discord debates, and complex proposals nobody reads.
On the surface, it looks like democratic voting. Under the table, the story is very different. Favoritism and influence are rampant. Egos clash. Nothing is based on merit. Politics derail progress. Operations stall due to reliance on contributors who come and go as they like.
Instead of liberation, current DAOs demand constant, exhausting human babysitting just to keep the lights on. They aren’t autonomous. They are inefficient human coordination disasters disguised as technology.
Why AI Agents. Why Now.
Here’s what changed: AI is here and its everywhere, the future is AI. AI agents aren’t theoretical anymore. They execute. They don’t need sleep, don’t have egos, don’t play politics, don’t ghost after two months. They optimize for the mission you gave them - relentlessly, around the clock.
The technology that can replace your 47-person governance committee exists today. The only question is whether you’ll use it or keep pretending another Snapshot vote will fix your dysfunction.
Compute scales. Human consensus doesn’t. This isn’t philosophy. It’s math.
DAOs Without Humans
Humans are still there, but on the sidelines. No longer drowning in the day-to-day operations. Finally free to do what humans are actually good at: building community, creating meaning, enjoying the mission they signed up for.
In this new DAO era: AI does the work. Humans get to BE the community instead of managing spreadsheets.
IMAGINE
A goal-optimizing machine run by a squad of specialized AI agents. Humans set the destination, not turn the cranks. No committees. No frantic voting cycles to approve a $5,000 expense. Just pure execution.
Here’s what the next evolution looks like in practice.
Let’s call it “GreenBlock Autonomous.”
The human founders define one immutable mission: “Ignite an urban food growing revolution in American cities.” They provide the initial ethical guardrails. Then, step back. The keys are handed to the agents.
The Fundraising Agent goes to work first. It doesn’t wait for donations. It analyzes real-time trends in generative art and crypto philanthropy. It autonomously designs a collection of “Urban Harvest” NFTs—unique digital art representing the future gardens it intends to build. It lists them on marketplaces, executes marketing campaigns on social media, and manages the community hype. Running 24/7, it capitalizes on every market uptick, funneling ETH directly into the DAO treasury without human assistance.
The Strategic Research Agent determines where that money goes. No relying on vibes or lengthy grant applications. It actively scans satellite imagery to identify empty lots in USDA-defined food deserts. Cross-referencing municipal zoning data, local health statistics, and poverty rates, it determines the highest-impact locations based on cold data. It decides autonomously: “Detroit zip code 48214 needs $75k for five community hubs immediately.”
The Execution Agents take over from there. A Scout Agent automatically emails local land trusts or community leaders in that Detroit zip code: “We have funding waiting for you to turn Lot 7C into a garden. Click here to accept.”
When a local group responds, the Vetting Agent runs instant background checks on the applicants. Checking their proposed budget against real-time prices at Home Depot, it auto-corrects the grant amount if the math is wrong.
Finally, the Treasury Agent executes the transaction. No board meeting needed. It uses milestone streaming, releasing 25% upfront. To get the next tranche, the human team on the ground must upload photos. The agent uses computer vision to verify the progress: Are those actually raised beds? Are tomatoes actually planted? Confirmed? The next payment hits their wallet instantly.
The time from “empty lot identified” to “funds in wallet” drops from six months to six days. Zero salary costs. Zero committee fatigue.
What’s Left for Humans?
The best part. The part you actually signed up for.
Planting seeds. Harvesting food. Building relationships. Celebrating wins. Being present in your community instead of trapped in a Notion doc at 11pm arguing about quorum thresholds.
The Current Model Is Dead
Disgusted with the state of DAOs after digging deep for 2.5 years and learning all the dirty secrets, I quit the DAO scene in 2024. But I never stopped thinking.
The future of DAOs is “no humans for humans,” powered by AI.
Human consensus cannot scale for every little decision. But compute can scale.
The machines are ready. The question is whether the humans clinging to their governance theater will let them work.
