Step 7: Build in Public and Storytelling 🎬
At Step 7, you're ready to launch. 🚀
If you've been contemplating an Impact DAO, today is the day to begin publicly. Make a commitment to building in public.
"When you build in public, everyone benefits, especially your cause."
Building in Public is Storytelling
When you build in public, people learn your 'why.' They understand it repeatedly because you're sharing it publicly. They learn how you're attempting to solve the 'why', the challenges you're facing, and the successes you're enjoying. They understand your thought process.
Those following your journey, even if they haven't been with you from the start, will gradually become part of your narrative. They'll start suggesting ideas, offering help, and making connections.
Gradually, they'll become part of your tribe—individuals eager to walk alongside you to achieve what you've started.
“You should always be striving to tell a story so good that it stops being yours—so your customer learns it, loves it, internalizes it, owns it. And tells it to everyone they know. - Tony Fadell, iPhone, Nest inventor and author, Build
Few Tips
Building in public requires showing up every day. Be consistent.
Consistently narrate your story and your 'why' in a thousand different ways, each time with the same passion as on the first day.
Be authentic and honest; don't put on a facade. You don’t need to hire a plane to make an impression. Be yourself.
Real stories have all shades - the good, the bad, the ugly, the beautiful, the happy, the sad, the highs, and the lows. And slowly, you’ll notice your audience starting to join you in all your shades 🤣😊😢😉😡😌
There will be times when you'll doubt yourself. You'll wonder if anyone is listening? Remember to never give up, stay optimistic, and continue to tell your story, even if you feel you're just talking to yourself.
Don’t overwhelm; be thoughtful about what you share.
“Great companies are built on great stories and great stories are completely transparently honest.” - Reid Hoffman, Founder LinkedIn
Big Advantage 🎬
Storytelling builds the emotional connection that makes people wanna do things. It builds trust.
Refi Summit's build-in-public ethos invited people to participate in the co-design process. People felt a part of the summit from day one.
The founder, Rex St John, and I even got schooled for going wild with the build-in-public concept, but we stuck to it. Taking place in Seattle from May 24th - 25th, 2023, Refi Summit is the largest indie gathering of folks at the intersection of Web3 and social good.
Refi Summit's build-in-public open call: Listen to the recording to learn how to co-design projects with the community.
The landmark emotional connection with Uniswap and the DeFi revolution. Digital artist Pplpleasr describes the creative process behind the Uniswap animation in a 45-second video. This emotional narration led to the formation of PleasrDAO.
Internet and Storytelling
On the internet, stories travel quickly and permissionlessly across borders. Moreover, it doesn't cost much to create stories, given the hundreds of excellent (and often free) tools available to present your narrative in various formats.
Take, for instance, the NFT artist Eissa from Syria. Using only a mobile phone to connect with the digital world, he has been able to tell his story. His narrative inspired the famous Jack Butcher of Visualize Value to support him. Also inspiring a group of NFT artists from the community to come together to launch the "Ticket to Paradise" NFT collection as a fundraiser, aiming to improve the lives of Eissa and his two small boys.
Twitter is an excellent starting platform if you're in the web3 space and want to build in public.
🤔Food for thought
Think of a founder or a brand whose story you can recount without needing to search the internet. A story so familiar, you don't need to think to recall it.
For me, that would be Scott Harrison, Founder of charity: water. I can tell his story well because I've heard it millions of times in a myriad of ways.
He's a master storyteller. I highly recommend listening to his podcast with Reid Hoffman, where they discuss applying storytelling techniques to solve the water crisis."
